Passive Solar in Knowlesville

This family lived off-grid for a number of years, relying on batteries and a generator for their electricity, and learning how to conserve it. It was found that this was fairly high maintenance, and as the home owner aged, it was decided to get grid electricity to help meet some of the lighting, appliance, and computer/internet needs.

The house was built to have most windows facing south for light and heat in the winter (in summer, a number of deciduous trees shade the house, providing cooling during the hottest time of the year).

The house is spring-fed for all of its water needs. A brook runs close to the home, so the owner is considering micro-hydro energy in the future.

Other features include gardening, to help meet food needs, and a composting toilet.
