3 kW Vertical Axis Wind Turbine in Lamèque- WIND
Peak power for this system is 5 kW. Can run the park’s 8 computers, most of the lights, the 2 fridges, and many other things. Also, the upcoming projects for this turbine would supply energy for lighting our observation tower and the footbridge that winds through our estuary. …
Off-grid House in Bois-Blanc- SE
When told the price of bringing utility lines to their home would cost $30,000, these homeowners decided they would embrace the do-it-yourself attitude and bring their home off-grid themselves. Happy with the quality and brand of the panels, the owners are very satisfied with their system. One change they would make however would be sure to hire certified installers, as they believe that would further lower costs and complications. The system runs everything in the house operating on 110 V, including the sound system, TV, fridge, and lighting. They received very little service from his dealer and had to complete the project …
130W Photovoltaic system in Pointe-Alexandre- SE
Providing lighting in 2 rooms — the bathroom and a bedroom — the project owner is very pleased with the results of this small solar PV system and is thinking of adding other lights in the basement over the winter. This system also provides power to his refrigerator for between 5–10 hours per day. The owner installed the system themselves in 2009, and is happy to report there have been no glitches since then. …
Solar Hot Water at Miramichi Youth House- SE
This solar heating system consists of 6 Thermo Dynamics 4×8 feet solar panels using ½” copper tubing with glycol; Solar Boiler™ mini (approximately 2000W). There are 4 Hot water tanks — 2 electric and 2 connected to solar panels. Glycol in the panels preheats cold water by heat exchange which then fills the solar tanks which feeds into the electric tanks. The system is operated by an electric pump. On a sunny day, it will only take 2 hours to fill all the tanks with hot water. The system reduces energy bill 20–30% by offsetting hot water costs. This system …
Government Building seeking LEED certification in Rexton- GT, PS
This LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) office complex has recently been completed and has yet to be evaluated and rated to the LEED standard Specifications. …
Geothermal Heat Pump in Loggieville- GT
The installer underestimated the size needed for this house and therefore it took much longer and cost more than initially estimated. Initially a 1.8 t (2 tons) heat pump was required, but in the end a 2.7 t (3 tons) was installed. Also, 2 horizontal loops (152 m (499′) each) in yard were planned, but more heat was needed so 2 vertical holes were later drilled (45 m (148′) each). Plastic piping with glycol was used for all 4 loops. The house (255 m2 (2743 sq. ft.), 2-storey) was previously heated with an oil furnace, therefore duct work already existed in house. The oil heat used to be inconsistent, …
1 kW & 400 W Wind Turbines in Little Aldouane- WIND
The owner is a retired mechanic with technical skills and interest in alternate energy. He does this as a hobby and does not keep track of costs, which he says are high. He does his own fabrication work and repairs to his systems. Energy generated is used for emergency power to light and heat his greenhouse (which happens rarely) and his house. Day-to-day it is used to light his shed where the storage batteries and inverter are kept. He finds it hard to find expert advice even among so-called experts and had to learn almost everything on his own. However …
Solar Hot Air in Miramichi- SE
The previous CEO of Southside Air has installed on the side of his home (1500 ft²) a Model RA 240 Solar Max by CanSolar, 44 × 88.5 panel, concaved so 8.5″ thick in center and 4″ thick at ends. Uses 31 Watts to operate system but creates an energy output of 1200–2400 Watts. This system works by solar air conduction, heated air within the solar panel is blown into the house basement which has a concrete floor, and this heat then rises to heat house. No cooling application to this system therefore it is not used during April to August. Energy savings is …
400 W Wind Turbine & 360 W Photovoltaic panels at James M. Hill High School in Miramichi- WIND, SE
This system is found on the roof of a local high school. It consists of two solar panels that are 1.2 × 1.2 m (4 × 4′), 180 W each from Shell Oil; one 400 W AIRX LAND wind turbine with a diameter of 116.8 cm (46″). The wind turbine can produce 38 kWh/month at a constant speed of 5.4 m/s (12 mph). It can reach a maximum of 49.2 m/s (110 mph), then shuts off. Both are connected to two VR 12 V Solar Batteries and an inverter inside a classroom with a wall demonstrating all the connections, and also monitors the energy input/output. There is also a camera setup with live feed …
Heat Exchange Solar Boiler in Newcastle- SE
This system was installed on the side of the owner’s house while building a new home, consisting of 2 solar panels with a photovoltaic cell; tubular, black glazed glass, filled with food grade glycol 40%, 60% water, (enough for a 4–5 person home). System is sensor driven, once the photovoltaic cell is activate it sends a message to the electric motor with pump, and by convection it heats the water in first tank. Once heated, the hot water fills into second tank which is also connected to city grid as a backup. When both tanks are filled with hot water, …
